Solon warns of a new human trafficking organization
Following the rescue of 12 victims in Myanmar on Monday, Senator Risa Hontiveros requested that government agencies look into an alleged extensive Chinese human trafficking operation that used Filipinos as recruiters.
Hontiveros encouraged the Philippine National Police Cybercrime Division and the National Bureau of Investigation to identify the syndicate’s leaders in a speech given under oath.
She named Shwe Kokko Special Economic Zone or Yatai New City, both of which are properties of Yatai International Holdings Group, as the location of the fake call center.
She also requested assistance for the rescued victims from the Department of Migrant Workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The victims crossed the border from war-torn Myanmar into Thailand, where they were welcomed by DFA officers before traveling via Bangkok to the Philippines.
Hontiveros claimed that the 12 victims were transported to Myanmar by the Chinese mafia after being hired as data encoders or customer support agents for companies based in Thailand.
They were paid in bitcoin to work as con artists, and if they did not deliver results, they were not provided with food or pay. Some apparently received death threats.
“The Chinese mafia aims to utilize all-Filipino teams in Myanmar and other nations because to our” English language competence, Hontiveros said. “May namumuong masamang plano ang Chinese mafia na ito na gawing all-Filipino team ang mga fraudster nila sa Myanmar at iba pang lugar.”
As a result of investment fraud and human trafficking, there is also labor trafficking, technology-facilitated trafficking, and even sexual trafficking, she pleaded with all relevant government agencies to pursue the offenders.
