A potential increase in collaboration between the Philippines and New Zealand in disaster response and climate change mitigation is being considered.

This occurred on Monday during a meeting in Siem Reap, Cambodia, between Undersecretary Jose Faustino, the officer in command of the Department of National Defense (DND), and Peeni Henare, the minister of defense of New Zealand.

The ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat and the 9th ADMM-Plus are taking place in Cambodia on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Arsenio Andolong, a spokesman for the DND, said in a statement released late Monday that “both ministers discussed the status of bilateral defense relations between the Philippines and New Zealand and welcomed opportunities to work together in various areas of cooperation, such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, pandemic response, and climate change.”

Faustino stated during his statement at the DND’s 83rd founding anniversary that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan will help the organization improve its disaster resilience and adapt to climate change.

The Philippine Army and the New Zealand Army are cooperating on technology transfers, intelligence gathering, and information sharing during the course of a medium-term commitment.
