Smuggled frozen products worth P63 million from Hong Kong and China were discovered in the port of Manila
On Monday, the Manila International Container Port revealed that the Bureau of Customs (BOC) had seized frozen meals worth PHP63 million that were hidden in cargo that had just arrived from Hong Kong and China (MICP).
Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz stated in a statement that the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS)-MICP has information on two containers from China and two containers from Hong Kong that were purported to contain thousands of kg of frozen prawn balls.
Each container was allegedly filled with misdeclared commodities worth PHP15.75 million.
The consignees did not declare additional frozen goods in their manifest, but in fact, these four containers did include those additional frozen items. I have personally complimented the crew for their tenacious pursuit of these smugglers and indicated my faith in them. We are merely carrying out our President’s order to keep up the fight against the smuggling of agricultural goods while defending our markets and the value of our goods, according to Ruiz.
The Victory JM Enterprise OPC was the importer of two containers from Hong Kong that were both declared to contain 25,000 kg of frozen prawn balls and arrived on November 17, according to Customs Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy.
On closer inspection, however, it was discovered that the first container had frozen tofu, chicken paws, and boneless beef, while the second container contained the same items as well as Vietnamese suckling pig and beancurd skin.
In the meantime, two containers that arrived from China on November 18 received two additional AOs.
Additionally, the canisters were mislabeled as containing frozen prawn balls when they actually contained frozen beef cheek meat and fish tofu.
“These operations make sure that we are conveying to these smugglers the correct message—we won’t back down. The BOC official continued, “I encourage our team members to stay committed to this aim and use their experiences to be one step ahead of these individuals we want to put behind bars.
Charges for violating Section 1400 (misdeclaration in goods declaration) and Section 1113 (property subject to seizure and forfeiture) of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act shall be brought against the consignee (CMTA).
The CIIS-MICP had suggested that a warrant of seizure and detention be issued (WSD).
The crew that examined the containers was praised by CIIS Director Jeoffrey Tacio for their dedication to putting an end to such actions.
“Since learning about these containers, we have been working extra hard. It is even more crucial that we work to secure the borders and ensure that none of these illicit commodities reach our markets as the prices of our goods rise, he said.
