The local administration and the Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga) distributed rice seeds worth PHP2.44 million to about 1,907 rice farmers in Surigao City from Wednesday to Thursday.

3,210 bags of certified palay seeds were distributed throughout the course of the two-day program, the Surigao City government’s Public Information Office (PIO) reported in a statement on Thursday.

The PIO stated that one of the goals of the current Surigao City government administration, led by Mayor Pablo Dumlao II, is agriculture, particularly rice cultivation.

It said that 34 barangays in Surigao City were home to the 1,907 farmers who benefited.

The National Rice Program of the DA is providing funding for the distribution of rice seeds.

The City Agriculture Office (CAO) gave certified rice seeds worth PHP1,815,255 to the local rice growers in September, according to the PIO.

The local administration of Surigao is scheduled to receive additional assistance through the DA’s Quick Respond Fund (QRF), the statement added.

70 bags of certified rice seeds and 100 bags of hybrid rice seeds will make up the additional QRF funding.

A supplementary grant from the Municipal Disaster and Risk Management Office is being used by the city government to purchase an additional 315 bags of certified rice seeds, according to the PIO.

It claimed that the delivery of the extra rice seeds to local farmers has not yet been scheduled by the city government through the CAO.
