PPA, DOTr to look into “lost” ships in Calapan Port

The shortage of operating passenger ships in Calapan Port in Oriental Mindoro, which led to kilometer-long lines and up to five-hour wait periods for passengers on Tuesday, is being looked into by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago stated that the situation at Calapan Port has stabilized since Wednesday and that the PPA is working with the DOTr to address the shortage of ships in a radio interview that aired on DZRH on Thursday.

There were about 55 maritime voyages every day. We only had 22 journeys on January 1, 2, and 3, however, when there was a surge of people returning home from the holidays in Calapan, Santiago stated in Filipino.

Before the holidays, he claimed that the port saw an average of 3,500 passengers per day.

That increased by more than a thousand people in a single day. So, he stated, “Shipping lines responded to passenger demand in an inversely proportionate manner.

Despite not having any authority over commercial ship operators directly, the PPA worked with the DOTr and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to alert them to the problem.

He stated that the long lines were neither a result of nor were caused by the ongoing construction of the new passenger terminal at the Calapan Port, which is intended to expand the port’s capacity from 1,000 to 4,600 people.

Even though ship operations have largely returned to normal, he warned that recent choppy seas and bad weather could cause excursions to be canceled and recommended passengers pay attention to Philippine Coast Guard recommendations.

Tens of thousands of travelers descended to the Calapan Port on Tuesday, creating long lines that extended up the road outside the PPA compound and a neighboring wet market.
