According to a Kremlin statement on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a ceasefire along the whole line of contact in Ukraine from noon on Friday (Moscow time) until midnight on Saturday.

The Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine and the Donbass was requested by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill so that “Orthodox people could attend church services on Christmas eve and Christmas Day.”

According to a statement from Putin, “Given the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Russian Federation’s Minister of Defense (Sergey Shoygu) to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine from 12:00 (0900GMT) January 6, 2023 to 24:00 (2100GMT) January 7, 2023.

Putin asked Ukraine to make the same declaration.

We call on the Ukrainian side to proclaim a ceasefire and provide them the opportunity to attend services on Christmas Eve and on the Day of the Nativity of Christ because many individuals who identify as Orthodox live in the conflict regions, it continued.

On December 7, Orthodox Christians observe Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, Ukraine criticized Russia’s unilateral temporary ceasefire and even dubbed it “hypocrisy.”
