Telcos need to put in double the effort to prevent SIM registration cramming.

To prevent the typical cramming when the deadline approaches, telecommunications operators (telcos) must work harder to encourage mobile phone users to register their subscriber identity module (SIM) cards.

Sen. Grace Poe, the primary author of Republic Act 11934 or the SIM Registration Act, claims that as of the data from January 9, just over 16 million SIM cards, or roughly 9 percent of the 168 million consumers of the three major telecoms, had registered.

“Telcos must step up their efforts to nudge customers toward signing up. If the majority of the more than 100 million phone users join up at the last minute, no number of days will be sufficient “In a statement on Tuesday, Poe said.

In order to prevent phishing attempts, frauds, and other cybercrime attacks spread through calls and text messages, users are required to register their SIM cards under RA 11934, the first piece of legislation signed into law during the 19th Congress.

Before April 26, all mobile device users must register, with the Department of Information and Communications Technology having the option of a 120-day extension.

Despite the increasing pains and learning curve, many of our compatriots are genuinely planning to register shortly, Poe stated. “I’m just concerned that everyone will want to register at the last minute, which will make it difficult to manage the flow of applicants,” the speaker said.

Poe also cautioned readers against unreliable or fraudulent websites that can trick visitors into disclosing their personal information.

Despite claims of assistance with registration but at a cost, she emphasized that registration is free.

In order to constantly remind subscribers of the connection to their official websites or other channels of registration, Poe stated, “We are encouraging the telcos to maintain delivering messages or start on an advertising campaign.”

According to the implementing rules and regulations, telcos must collaborate with local governments to reach subscribers, particularly those who live in remote communities or have physical limitations like the elderly or people with disabilities.
