Residents of Negros are cautioned about the ongoing increase in dengue incidence.

As dengue cases are expected to continue to grow this year, a health official in Negros Oriental on Monday advised the people not to relax their guard.

Dr. Liland Estacion, assistant provincial health officer, stated that the increase in dengue cases is anticipated to continue this year due to the relaxation of quarantine regulations related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

She remarked in a combination of English and Cebuano, “People are now spending more time outside of their houses, and the more interactions and interaction with people, the higher the danger of transmission of the dengue virus.”

She pointed out that in contrast to 2021, when the pandemic was at its worst and most people were confined to their homes, last year the province recorded a high infection rate.

Records from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed that 2,232 dengue cases with 11 deaths were reported in Negros Oriental in 2022, compared to only 803 infections with no deaths.

Estacion added that unusual weather patterns contribute to dengue transmission by enhancing mosquito breeding grounds that spread the infection.

The PHO recorded a total of 23 cases as of January 7 this year, which is a 28 percent increase from the 18 illnesses and 0 deaths documented during the same period last year.

The most cases were in La Libertad town, where there were 13, then there were three cases each in Bais City and Dumaguete, one case each in Bayawan City, Manjuyod, Dauin, and Sta. Catalina.
