Weather-related agricultural losses amount to P746M

According to the Department of Farmland’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center, damage to agriculture after intense rains brought on by a low-pressure region, shear line, intertropical convergence zone, and northeast monsoon has now reached PHP746.5 million (DA-DRRM).

The DA-DRRM reported on Tuesday that eight regions across the nation had seen an impact on about 36,307 farmers.

Damage and losses were reported in the MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) region, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga regions. The amount of production lost was 14,158 metric tons, and there were 41,721 hectares of agricultural land affected, the report said.

The rice industry suffered the largest loss, totaling PHP597.3 million, with Eastern Samar being the worst-affected region.

A significant loss in corn production was also noted, amounting to PHP113.9 million and affecting 10 regions, with Cagayan suffering the most volume loss.

High-value crops, such as various vegetables, bananas, and root crops, were not spared either; in Cagayan, Isabela, Oriental Mindoro, Catanduanes, Northern, and Eastern Samar, Biliran, Bohol, Surigao del Norte, and Zamboanga City, losses were roughly PHP34.4 million.

A total of PHP1.02 million worth of losses to livestock and poultry, including fowl, ducks, sheep, swine, cattle, and carabao, have also been reported in Cagayan and five other districts.

While agri-fishery damage is still being validated, the DA pledged its response through ongoing interaction with the local government entities of the impacted areas.

The DA previously said that the delivery of interventions and other aid to impacted farmers is complete.

These included zero-interest loan programs of up to PHP25,000 and the utilization of a quick response fund, as well as rice, corn, and vegetable seeds, medications, and biologics for cattle and poultry, and.
