Local climate change action plan to be updated in Iloilo City
The local authority in this area is getting ready to improve its 2013-prepared Local Climate Change Action Plan.
“I set a goal for myself to finish our local climate change action plan by the middle of this year. We are currently in the process of improving the CDRA (climate disaster risk assessment report), as we would be unable to do so without correct and latest data, according to Jose Roni Pealosa, the planning and development coordinator for the city of Iloilo.
Along with the National Resilience Council (NRC), the Manila Observatory, and the Ateneo de Manila University, he said, the city’s CDRA was completed more than a year ago.
“These (CDRA) are technical maps, scientific data illustrating the city’s vulnerabilities to climate hazards or consequences,” he said, citing, among other things, typhoons, storm surges, flooding, and others.
According to Pealosa, the 2013 Local Climate Change Action Plan was required by the Climate Change Commission and was a prerequisite for accessing the People’s Survival Fund.
“However, it was not as correctly formulated at the time because there was a lack of scientific facts regarding our vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change. We strictly adhered to the guidelines in the template,” he stated.
The City Environment and Natural Resources, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, civil society organizations, and the commercial sector will assist with this year’s upgrading.
Penalosa said the city can anticipate a lot of Climate Resilient Cities projects after the action plan is finished, including greening the city further and switching motorized vehicles to cleaner fuels.
Under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Climate Resilient Cities Project, the planning office received a geographic information system workstation that might support the city’s data bank, which is essential for updating.
On January 10, 2023, the apparatus and two sets of automatic weather stations were delivered to the local administration.
The Iloilo City Technical Working Group (CTWG) signed a commitment to the Climate Change Competency Assessment Framework (3CAF) after the changeover as the city government pledges to support the initiative to build resilient cities and inhabitants.
