Dependents of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) who meet the requirements are encouraged to apply for their scholarship program by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Bicol (OWWA-5).

The Education For Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) for the academic year 2023–2024 is officially accepting applications, according to Maria Via Dometita, OWWA Bicol communication officer.

“For the EDSP, applications are currently being accepted. A scholarship program for incoming college students is offered here. There is no restriction or space reserved just for Bicol. Any applicant from Bicol may submit an application. It is still possible for you to study, take exams, and place in the top 400 in the Philippines. (We don’t have any slots or a cap just for Bicol. Bicol candidates may come in any number. To qualify as a scholar, they simply need to pass the test and place among the top 400 scorers nationwide “explained Dometita.

According to her, the EDSP is an initiative of OWWA that provides qualified dependents of currently employed overseas Filipino workers with the financial aid of PHP60,000 every academic year (OFWs).

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will conduct a qualifying examination for applicants who will be incoming college freshmen, she explained.

A child of an active OWWA-member OFW who is single or an OFW who is married but has no children and who has no failing grades and a general weighted average of at least 80% in all academic and non-academic subjects during the previous academic year while enrolled full-time is eligible to apply for the EDSP scholarship, according to Dometita.

This year’s application period is from January 9 to January 31.
