While African swine flu persists, Iloilo looks for alternative protein sources.

In light of the ongoing threat posed by African swine fever, the provincial government in this area has been laying the framework to increase the source of supply for protein, notably pig, chicken, and fish products (ASF).

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. remarked in a media interview on Tuesday that these measures “are not necessarily ASF measures; these are agricultural measures to have various options and not simply pigs.”

ASF is being fought on two fronts, according to Defensor: supply side and prevention and containment.

He continued by saying that, even if they are still verifying evidence to the effect that the ASF won’t just vanish after it has hit a region, the supply side needs to be strengthened.

“We need to adapt. We must struggle from the supply side. And as we previously stated, since pork is the province’s main source of protein, the availability of meat poses a nutritional challenge.

The aim is to source the nutritional requirements from chicken and inland water aquaculture to balance the source of protein in addition to refilling the supply by cultivating pigs in regions not yet afflicted by animal illness and those with a lower risk of infection.

He added that he would strive to finish the illustration of the software within the next week. “That is how we adjust to ASF, the new normal in ASF now that it is here with us,” he said.

In Iloilo, 17 of the 22 local government units impacted by the ASF are currently in the red or infected zone, indicating that the illness is widespread and not limited to a single barangay.

The ASF has been documented in 104 barangays as of February 20 in the municipalities of Oton, San Miguel, Alimodian, Leganes, Sta. Barbara, New Lucena, Mina, Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas, Banate, Barotac Viejo, Zarraga, Janiuay, San Dionisio, Batad, Dingle, and Concepcion, according to data from the Office

Live pigs, meat, pork products (fresh/frozen and uncooked processed pork goods, excluding cooked and canned processed pork products), and swine genetic material cannot be brought into or taken out of the aforementioned municipalities.
