Towns included in the school construction initiative will be listed by March.
According to the Department of Education, the official list of first through fourth-class towns to be included in this year’s school building program may be released next month (DepEd).
DepEd official Michael Poa stated in a Viber message on Wednesday that the process of finalizing the locations to be covered is still ongoing.
“By the first or second week of March, we hope to have a definitive list… DPWH is used to do this (Department of Public Works and Highways). Whenever the list is complete, we will release it, he told the Philippine News Agency.
The DepEd made the announcement as Vice President Sara Duterte said that some of these municipalities will be covered by the budget grant.
Duterte stated in her speech on Tuesday that they had chosen to make the most of a “system-based” approach in pinpointing areas.
There will be municipalities that acquire school buildings from DepEd in 2023 GAA when we execute it… Kami po nalimitahan ngayon sa 5th at 6th class communities sa budget namin sa school building program (Our budget is no longer restricted to 5th and 6th class municipalities),” she remarked.
We follow the needs-based checklist we developed, which the Department of Education uses to give priority to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Communities and Last-Mile Schools, she continued.
Duterte claimed that the allocated budget for the school construction program is still insufficient in light of the actual needs of the entire nation.
She said that the House of Representatives school building initiative is not covered by the DepEd checklist.
Prior to now, the DepEd has cited issues with crowded classrooms and deteriorated school facilities as its top worries in the education sector that had an impact on students’ learning spaces.
The DepEd stated that it has committed PHP15.6 billion for the construction of new school buildings, with around 6,000 classrooms targeted this year, at the Basic Education Report (BER) on Jan. 30.
Only 104,536 of the 327,851 school buildings in the nation, according to the agency, are in good shape.
Together with allocating funds, the DepEd made sure to work in conjunction with the DPWH to ensure the successful execution of the school construction program.
Last Thursday, DPWH Assistant Secretary Antonio Molano Jr. and DepEd Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III reaffirmed their commitment to working together.
