The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has received an official complaint from Duncan McCann, a father of three and campaigner with the 5rights Foundation, accusing YouTube of collecting information about the videos children watch, where they are watching them, and what devices they are using to watch them.

YouTube claims to have made investments in safeguarding households and to have created YouTube Kids, which it describes as “family-friendly” and which uses automatic filtering and parental input to protect kids.

According to the ICO, it has received the complaint and will give it thorough consideration. To decide whether to open an investigation into the situation, the office has up to three months.

According to a YouTube representative reported by the British media, “We remain dedicated to continuing our interaction with the ICO on this important topic, as well as with other key stakeholders including children, parents, and child-protection specialists.”

Several kids, according to McCann, watch YouTube videos on family devices, where viewing information can be automatically collected because the account is not designated for kids.

His complaint is said to be the first examination of the ICO children’s code, which was created in 2020 and was allowed a year to be implemented by internet companies.

In 2021, 89% of UK youngsters utilized the video platform, according to the telecom regulator Ofcom.

Campaigners in the US had previously accused YouTube of gathering information on children under the age of 13 without getting permission from their parents. 2019 saw the firm get a $170 million fine as a result of the case. Although it refused to accept blame, YouTube did pay the penalty.
