No Lenten vacation for BI employees working in airports
To ensure that there are enough officers available to service the traveling public before, during, and after the Holy Week holiday, airport employees of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) are not permitted to take vacations for a period of three weeks.
The ban on requesting leaves, which began on March 24 and ends on April 15, is applicable to all personnel working at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and all other international airports in the country, according to Commissioner Norman Tansingco on Monday.
He continued by saying that any BI employee posted to the ports during this time will not be granted permission to take a holiday or travel overseas.
The head of the BI said in a statement that the left limit was necessary to prevent service interruptions or compromises to the traveling public over the Lenten vacation when there will undoubtedly be a considerable increase in the number of passengers entering and leaving the nation.
The order was made in front of the flood of foreign travelers anticipated at the NAIA as well as other important ports like Mactan, Clark, and Kalibo.
“We must ensure that our immigration booths at the airports are well staffed in order to cope with the huge lines of travelers who will be arriving from or departing for overseas to spend time with their friends and relatives,” Tansingco continued.
According to statistics, since the Philippines reopened its borders to foreigners in March of last year, the total number of international travelers entering and leaving the nation each day has increased to more than 30,000, compared to only 6,000 to 9,000 per day in March 2022.
When the epidemic broke out in March 2020, the Philippines, like other nations, saw a significant decline in the amount of foreign travel.
Holy Week this year takes place from April 2 to April 9.
