There will be “living” Stations of the Cross in Quezon Town.

Mayor Matt Erwin Florido promised that the Buhay na Kubol Festival 2023, which returns after a three-year break caused by Covid-19 restrictions, will be the biggest event for the Holy Week celebration on April 3-9.

In an interview on Thursday, Florido noted that among the festival’s planned activities are depictions of Jesus Christ’s life and passion by local artists.

He defined “kubol” as a hut, and he went on to say that several of them will be erected to symbolise the 14 Stations of the Cross. Artists will portray Jesus Christ’s life and ministry in each kubol or station.

On Holy Wednesday, according to Florido, the actors would just remain motionless in the kubol as part of the “Istasyon Heneral.” Only on Good Friday will they move during the “Prusisyon Heneral” or procession, after which they will act out scenes from Jesus’ earthly ministry in each of the huts.

The mayor noted that on Good Friday, visitors would be able to see the Centurion Festival, in which participants would dress as Roman soldiers, as well as the “penitensya,” in which men would parade through the streets while publicly flogging themselves, ostensibly as atonement for their sins.

The Senakulo, a stage drama that will be performed in the municipal hall late on Black Saturday afternoon by members of the Sariaya Tourism Artists Guild, is something of which Florido is especially proud.

He remarked, “I’m personally appreciative to Sariaya Mayor Marcelo Gayeta for permitting a combined effort of his town’s gifted artists and our own abilities to perform the Senakulo.

The customary “salubong,” which takes place at the first hour of Easter Sunday, will recreate the encounter of the risen Jesus and his mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The mayor stated that they anticipate having thousands of domestic and international visitors come to their town to see the events over Holy Week and that they anticipate local businesses to experience increased sales during this time.

However, Florido, a fourth-class town, acknowledged that they still don’t have enough tourist accommodations, so most visitors can’t stay overnight.
