Utah children must have parental approval before using social media
As the first US state to do so, Utah now mandates that social media firms get parental approval before allowing children to use their services.
The laws, which Governor Spencer Cox signed into effect on Thursday, are intended to shield kids from potential online risks.
The second regulation forbids businesses from employing a design or feature that makes a juvenile become addicted to a company’s social media platform. One rule compels social media companies to verify that users in the state are 18 or older before allowing them to register an account.
The governor declared, “We’re no longer willing to allow social media companies to harm the mental health of our youth.”
Companies that expose kids to addictive features and designs risk being fined $250,000 in addition to $2,500 for each child.
In certain situations, parents are also permitted to bring a direct lawsuit against social media firms for monetary, physical, or emotional harm.
