The largest passenger terminal building (PTB) in the nation was opened by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Monday at Calapan Port.

According to Engr. Margarito Dimailig, manager of the Engineering Services Division at the PPA Project Management Office-Mindoro, the three-story, PHP353 million PTB was created to accommodate 3,500 passengers comfortably and conveniently at any given moment.

He said that the new PTB will change the game for people coming into and leaving Oriental Mindoro as well as those coming from other provinces in Luzon, like Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.

According to Dimailig, the PTB will significantly boost both provincial and regional tourism in the Mimaropa area.

In keeping with the upcoming Holy Week, he continued, “It aims to provide more convenience and comfort to the sea-traveling passengers.”

Dimailig further mentioned that most of PTB’s staff members are from Calapan and the surrounding areas.

According to PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago, the new PTB has an all-gender restroom, a play area, a nursing station/clinic, a first aid clinic, a prayer space, and escalators and elevators for travelers.

He added that the building has external walls with “Pakudos,” which are typical components of Mangyan arts and culture distinguished by symmetrical, attractive, and orderly utilization of lines and space. He claimed that the PTB will be a tourist attraction unto itself.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, the event’s guest of honor, said during the PPA’s live-streamed inaugural ceremony that the public expects effective services like those promised by the PTB.

He expressed his gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for backing the “Build, Build, Build” proposal of the late Rodrigo Duterte.

At the PTB project’s groundbreaking in November 2021, Duterte and Go were both present.
