Typhoid fever cases are on the rise in Negros Oriental.

Typhoid fever cases in Negros Oriental have increased over the previous three months, prompting the Provincial Health Office (PHO) to step up its surveillance.

According to the consolidated weekly report up to March 18, according to PHO director Dr. Liland Estacion’s virtual press conference on Monday, the province had 87 total cases with no fatalities.

However, this is a 34 percent increase over the 54 mortality rate from the same time last year.

The official also raised the alert after learning that as of March 24, 10 instances had been detected in just one cluster in Sitio Lapnol, Barangay Tanglad in Manjuyod town.

Some of them were given admission to the Manjuyod Rural Health Unit and the Bais City District Hospital.

She reported that the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) in this nation’s capital had accepted two new patients.

“We have advised the local government unit (LGU) to carry out a case investigation and have dispatched a sanitary inspection team there to ascertain the origin of the cases,” the official added.

To make their water palatable, Jerry cans and chlorine were supplied, she continued.

The PHO and LGU held health education sessions on how to make stock solutions and distributed disease-related informational materials to the locals.

She urged locals to always boil water before consuming it, particularly if they were unclear of the source.
