Starlink is installed by PhilSA in 2 GIDAs.

As of Monday, two geographically remote and underserved communities now have Starlink satellite internet, according to the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA). (GIDAs).

The use of satellite internet as part of PhilSA’s INCENTIVISE (Introducing Non-Geostationary Satellite Constellations Test Deployments to Improve Internet Service) project, which calls for new Satellite Internet Operators (SIOs) to launch test deployments in particular remote sites, has benefited Barangay Apad in Jomalig town, Quezon province, and Barangay Dikapanikian in Dingalan town, Aurora province.

According to PhilSA, the deployment of SpaceX-operated internet is intended for local government and public education. For six months, there will be no charge for connectivity for the two barangays’ students, teachers, and local government offices.

In a statement, PhilSA Director General Joel Marciano noted that the effort “is meant to demonstrate the capabilities of new and emerging space technologies, such as Low Earth Orbit internet satellite constellations, in bridging the connectivity gap in particular in remote and rural areas.”

The ongoing construction of terrestrial infrastructure and undersea cable for tying the nation’s numerous islands together, he continued, are enhanced and coexisted with by satellite overlays.

Meanwhile, PhilSA said that SpaceX answered their INCENTIVISE call in October 2021. Starlink, according to PhilSA, has an easy-to-setup infrastructure that makes it perfect for isolated places.

According to PhilSA, Sharon Villaverde, the district supervisor for Quezon Public Schools, DepEd Jomalig, has praised the tremendous assistance the project provides.

Because they can access online materials, teachers and students are increasingly using the internet for lesson planning. (Having high-speed Internet is a huge aid to the kids and teachers especially in drafting lesson plans as they now have access to online resources… ) Nakakatulong din ang pagkakaroon ng signal sa panahon ng sakuna sapagkat ang Barangay Apad at malimit daanan ng bagyo… Connectivity is useful during calamities, especially since typhoons frequently hit Barangay Apad),” Villaverde was reported as adding.
