The Public is encouraged to participate in PH Veterans Week from April 5β12
The public is encouraged to participate in this year’s Philippine Veterans Week (PVW), which runs from April 5 to 12, according to the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO).
This coincides with the country’s celebration of the “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor), which is being held on April 10.
The DND and PVAO said in a joint statement on Friday that a number of commemorative and special events will be organized to remember the bravery and heroic actions of Filipino veterans.
This year’s commemoration, which is centered on the theme “Kagitingan ng mga Beterano, Pundasyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino,” aims to honor the veterans whose bravery and sacrifices laid the groundwork for the nation’s liberation.
It went on to say that “their tales of bravery and of banding together for a common goal will also be emphasized to serve as a reminder to every Filipino of the importance of solidarity and togetherness in nation-building.”
According to Proclamation 466, s. 1989, the nation observes the PVW every year from April 5 to April 11 in order to promote, maintain, and remember the values, thoughts, and deeds of the war veterans in order to strengthen patriotism and love of the country, particularly among young people.
Meanwhile, Presidential Order 203, s. 1987 designates April 9 of each year as “Araw ng Kagitingan.”
The Dawn Ceremony and wreath-laying ritual at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on April 5 will kick off the PVW commemoration.
The Review in Honor of the Veterans will take place immediately after it at 9 a.m. at the Hunters ROTC Guerilla Field at the Philippine Army Headquarters, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
In accordance with Proclamation 90, s. 2022, enacted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., April 10 was designated a regular holiday in celebration of the “Araw ng Kagitingan.”
The “Dambana ng Kagitingan” or Shrine of Valor” is located at the Mt. Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan, where the celebration will begin at 8 a.m.
On April 11, at 8 a.m., the Capas National Shrine in Capas, Tarlac will host the Paggunita sa Capas and the Tribute to All Filipino Heroes, which is customarily conducted on Corregidor Island.
On April 12, at 5 p.m., the PVW will come to a close with the Sunset Ceremony at the Libingan ng mga Bayani at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. During this ceremony, veterans will assemble in the setting sun to share their tales and recite a patriotic oath.
Supportive events will also be staged across the nation to highlight the contributions of Filipino veterans and heroes.
One of these is the “Ride for Valor,” a motorcycle/big bike riders’ tour event that will travel the route of the Bataan Death March, which will take place on April 9.
From April 3 to April 18, the traveling exhibit “War of our Fathers” by the Philippine Veterans Bank will be on display at The Bunker in Balanga City, Bataan, and on April 12, a ceremony in Capas, Tarlac will award US Congressional Gold Medals to Filipino World War II Veterans living in Central Luzon.
The Department of Education will also hold several national competitions for students nationwide, including a poster-making contest, an essay writing contest, a songwriting contest, and an oratorical contest in April to promote youth participation and foster a deeper understanding of Philippine history. These competitions will be held in collaboration with PVAO, Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), and VFP-Sons and Daughters Association, Inc.
The activities for the 2023 PVW and the national “Araw ng Kagitingan” celebration are free and accessible to the public as long as basic health precautions are followed.
