DOST provides solid waste management technology to La Union Town.

Under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) initiative, the Department of Science and Technology in the Ilocos Region (DOST-1) donated two multi-purpose bio-shredders and a twin drum composter machine to this community.

The distribution of the waste management technology is intended to promote environmental preservation in the municipality, according to a statement released on Thursday by Provincial Science and Technology Office La Union director Jonathan Viernes.

The DOST created the Dual Drum small-scale composting system to handle the meager amount of biodegradable garbage generated by the communities. The management of solid biodegradable trash by barangays, schools, canteens, restaurants, and other food processing businesses may be replaced by this, the official stated.

Additionally, there was training on the twin drum composter machine’s maintenance and operation.

Delfin Comedis Jr., the mayor of Burgos town, thanked DOST-1 for donating equipment that will aid their community in environmental preservation and protection.

“Nagpapasalamat kami sa DOST sa walang humpay na tulong at suporta na ibinibigay niyo sa amin lalong-lalo na sa machine na makakatulong upang mapabilis ang pag compost ng mga nakokolekta namin na nabubulok na basura (We thank the DOST for their help and support especially with the machine that will be a big help in decomposing wastes),” he said.

Additionally, as part of the CEST program, the DOST Ilocos regional office held a blended planning session with representatives from the LGUs of Boliao and Dagupan, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Pangasinan Provincial Office, Pangasinan State University, Universidad de Dagupan, and the Provincial Fisheries Office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Pangasinan.

The strategy, according to Provincial Science and Technology Pangasinan head Engineer Arnold Santos, strives to identify practical programs and activities that will have an effect on the communities.

“Define the roles of stakeholders and identify necessary interventions for the implementation in order for the group to create a plan. According to the needs, problems, and possibilities found in their communities, the stakeholders choose the right training, activities, and interventions after the program’s planning phase, he said.

In order to create resilient, empowered, and forward-thinking communities in the area, he continued, the DOST would continue to offer interventions in science and technology to increasingly marginalized and underserved groups.
