G-7 leaders debate international cooperation and Ukraine

At a meeting of their foreign ministers on Monday in Japan, the senior diplomats of the G-7 countries discussed, among other things, collaboration with other countries and the conflict in Ukraine.

Tokyo’s top aim, according to Japan’s foreign minister and summit host Yoshimasa Hayashi, is to “increase engagement with global partners through the active contributions of the G7 to various global challenges.”

The G-7 is “strongly determined to firmly reject unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force,” he said, expressing Japan’s “intention to resolutely demonstrate to the world the G-7’s strong determination.” He continued by saying that the international community is “at history’s turning point.”

The foreign ministers of the world’s seven advanced nations arrived in the resort town of Karuizawa in central Japan on Sunday for a three-day summit that will last until Tuesday. Japan is the G-7’s current chair. The meetings also include participation from a representative of the European Union.

Police officers are patrolling the meeting location where delegates from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US, and the EU will be in attendance. The town is on high alert.

Next month, a meeting of the G-7 leaders is slated to take place in Hiroshima.

When interacting with foreign partners, Hayashi said to his fellow G-7 members on Monday: “When doing so, it is important to fully consider the individual circumstances of each foreign partner and, rather than imposing values on them, to demonstrate the significance of a free and open international order based on the rule of law.”

The top diplomats of the G-7 countries, according to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry, “shared the view to cooperate closely in responding to the issues of energy and food security facing the world.”

regularize conversations, enhance collaboration with ASEAN and Pacific Island countries

Hayashi also mentioned Russia’s current conflict with Ukraine and “its threats of the use of nuclear weapons.”

The G-7 aims to cooperate with the growing and developing nations known as the “Global South” to address these concerns, according to Japan’s top diplomat, who called for sustaining “international order based on the rule of law.”

According to the ministry statement, the G-7 foreign ministers discussed regularizing talks and enhancing cooperation with the Pacific Island nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Supporting the centrality and unity of the ASEAN, Hayashi urged medium- and long-term collaboration with the group of ten countries in the area.

The majority of the second day’s agenda items that the G-7’s top diplomats discussed were “open exchange of views regarding the situation in Ukraine, including an assessment of the current status and future prospects,” according to a statement from the ministry.

In the midst of the lengthy conflict, Hayashi said it was crucial to keep the G-7 and other like-minded nations united, maintain strict sanctions against Russia and steadfast support for Ukraine, and improve relations with other nations, including those in the Global South.

The statement continued, “The G-7 Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening, fully coordinating, and enforcing sanctions on Russia, as well as to continuing strong support for Ukraine.

The G-7 foreign ministers “reaffirmed that Russia’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric is unacceptable,” calling on Moscow to withdraw all troops and equipment from Ukraine “immediately and unconditionally.”

They also agreed to strengthen collaboration to prevent and address sanctions evasion as well as the supply of weapons to Russia by third parties.
