Abalos promises to support Acorda’s PNP reforms wholeheartedly.

The newly appointed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. was welcomed by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. on Monday. He also pledged the department’s full support for the implementation of reforms in the police service.

Abalos stated that he anticipates the PNP will continue to be tenacious and watchful in thwarting criminal elements to uphold law and order in every nook and cranny of the nation under new leadership.

“I believe that Acorda is the best candidate to lead the PNP because of his extensive experience and integrity in overcoming the challenges of being PNP chief,” Abalos said. “Naniniwala akong si Acorda ang nararapat na mamuno sa PNP,” Acorda said.

“I also expect the support, cooperation, and unity of the entire PNP force to the new leadership to allow him to carry out his duties and mandate as the national police chief,” he continued.

During the customary change of command ceremony at Camp Crame on Monday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. installed Acorda as the 29th PNP commander.

The top commander officially appointed Acorda to the highest position in the PNP by handing him the Command Saber. Acorda was elevated to the rank of Police General (4 stars) upon taking over as Chief PNP.

Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., who retired from the police force on his 56th birthday, was replaced by Acorda.

Marcos recognized the PNP’s noteworthy successes over the previous eight months under Azurin’s leadership during the ceremony.

He spoke to the significant successes in maintaining peace and order, particularly in the fights against terrorism, kidnapping, smuggling, loose guns, child abuse, and other illicit activities.

In support of the administration’s development objectives, Marcos also presented his instructions to the new PNP commander, placing a strong emphasis on law and order, and peace.

He asked the PNP’s 228,000 officers and members of the rank-and-file to support the reform measures put forth by the previous leadership, especially the internal cleansing program and strict respect for the law in all police operations.

Acorda, the second PNP head chosen by Marcos, was a member of the “Sambisig” class of the Philippine Military Academy in 1991 and had previously held the position of PNP Director for Intelligence.

In his speech, Acorda urged the creation of a “Serbisyong Nagkakaisa,” based on the administration’s calls for national cohesion and togetherness, and aiming to create a single PNP.
