On Thursday, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte emphasized the necessity of improving the nation’s public health system.

Duterte used the country’s experience with the epidemic as a wake-up call to prioritize public health in her remarks at the opening ceremony of the 49th Midyear Convention of the Philippine College of Surgeons in this city.

She said that the impoverished should have easy access to medical care. “Coming from one of the biggest cities in the country, I have learned that it is necessary to establish satellite offices in various parts of the country to further help our countrymen,” she said.

Duterte also expressed his gratitude to the medical professionals for giving their lives in the midst of the pandemic.

The pandemic, she said, “has awakened us to see that we still need to strengthen our health sector, our health care services, and to ensure that medical services are accessible to our countrymen, especially those who need help.”

According to Duterte, the lack of access to basic healthcare in underserved areas has prompted the Office of the Vice President (OVP) to launch a medical assistance program and make sure that taxpayer money is going to the people who need it.

Eight satellite offices of the OVP are located outside the National Capital Region. They can be found in the cities of Zamboanga, Davao, Tandag, Bacolod, Cauayan, Dagupan, and Bacolod.

According to Duterte, the increased utilization of monies designated for medical assistance demonstrates that the office’s goal of bringing government services “closer to the people” is being accomplished.
