Arexvy, the first RSV vaccine in the world, was given the go-ahead by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday.

GSK’s pharmaceutical behemoth Arexvy has received approval for the treatment of lower respiratory illnesses brought on by RSV in patients 60 years of age and older.

According to the FDA, RSV is a very contagious virus that can infect the lungs and breathing airways of people of all ages.

According to Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, “Today’s approval of the first RSV vaccine is an important public health achievement to prevent a disease which can be life-threatening.” It also reflects the FDA’s continued commitment to facilitating the development of safe and effective vaccines for use in the United States.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV causes 6,000–10,000 fatalities among persons 65 and over in the US, as well as 60,000–120,000 hospitalizations.

In a study with over 12,500 participants, the vaccination dramatically cut the probability of contracting the illness by 82.6% and was effective against severe illness by 94.1%.
