PBBM has just returned from a productive ASEAN summit in Indonesia.

Following his participation in the successful 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. landed in Manila on Thursday.

Around 5:54 p.m., the plane carrying Marcos and the government delegation from the Philippines, which also included First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, touched down at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

Marcos stressed the significance of maintaining the international system of rules-based order, which has supported regional security, peace, and order in the region, at the meeting with ASEAN leaders.

Additionally, Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ adherence to the multilateral trading system and free trade ideals.

In addition to micro, small, and medium-sized organizations, he advocated for increased assistance for nano businesses as well as for their integration into the global economy.

In his welcome speech, Marcos stated that his administration “continues to work toward long-term food and energy security, as well as to address the impacts of climate change, among other things.”

He added that the Philippines had also expressed support for the regional bloc’s attempts to establish a sense of community, including the bolstering of its institutions.

Marcos expressed gratitude to Indonesian President Joko Widodo for his country’s gracious hospitality toward him and his entourage.

He declared the ASEAN summit a success and voiced optimism for development on the political and economic fronts.

“I think the summit was a success and that it established the new directions that the chairman, President Widodo, and all the member states agreed upon. Additionally, a lot of fresh ideas were put forth and embraced. And we hope to see some development in politics and undoubtedly in the economy,” he added.

According to Marcos, the ASEAN leaders also spoke on regional and global issues such as the turmoil in Ukraine, the situation in Myanmar, and the South China Sea dispute.

He urged Myanmar to abide by the Five-Point Consensus peace plan and supported Indonesia’s increased initiatives in its implementation.

We also decided to modify our strategy for dealing with the situation in Myanmar and try to engage the country on all fronts and with all political groups that are active there and participating in the issue, he added.

The humanitarian catastrophe and the ongoing economic effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which add to the world’s food and energy insecurity, deeply concerned Marcos.

He restated the Philippines’ commitment to the peaceful settlement of conflicts regarding the South China Sea and argued in favor of a maritime order based on norms and based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In order to boost the development of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), Marcos further called for stronger cooperation among the concerned nations.

Both the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with Representatives of the ASEAN Youth and the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with Representatives of the ASEAN-Interparliamentary Assembly (AIPA) was attended by Marcos.

He also went to the meetings of the High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Community Post-2025 Vision and the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with Representatives of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-ABAC).
