Localities in Cebu postpone lessons as Mawar gets worse

In preparation for Super Typhoon Mawar, several local government units (LGU) in Cebu province issued an order suspending classes at the elementary and high school levels on Friday.

The storm signal has changed back to super typhoon status, and the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is expected to be affected by it by Friday night or early Saturday morning, according to the state weather bureau.

The first places to announce school suspension on Thursday were the cities of Talisay and Naga, the towns of Minglanilla, Argao, Daanbantayan, Consolacion, and San Fernando.

Alcoy, Ginatilan, Sibonga, and Tabogon in the south and Liloan and Tabogon in the north declared Friday that classes at all levels will be suspended to safeguard students from the effects of the oncoming typhoon.

Although lessons have been postponed, Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas advised pupils to continue their education through modules.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)-Mactan’s chief weather expert, Alfredo Quiblat Jr., warned Cebuanos to prepare for the weather disruption.

Quiblat asserted that Mawar won’t be a reason for worry because it won’t make landfall anywhere in the nation.

He predicted that the super typhoon would land in the PAR somewhere in the “extreme north” of Luzon. Still, the reliable forecast indicated that it would recurve away directly toward Japan by Monday or Tuesday.

Quiblat added that if thunderstorms exist, “Central and Eastern Visayas can expect light to moderate rain and occasionally heavy rain.”

In anticipation of a potential landslide in the upland towns, Harold Alcontin, director of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Organization (CCDRRMO), stated they had prepositioned emergency response people and equipment in the upland area.

About 30 mountain communities surround the capital city, some of which have a history of landslides during inclement weather.
