NDRRMC: Mayon turmoil forces roughly 10,000 households to relocate
According to a study released on Friday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Bicol Region’s (Region 5) ongoing Mayon Volcano eruption has so far impacted 9,947 people.
This translates to 38,391 people living in 26 barangays across Region 5.
The NDRRMC said that 5,125 families, or 18,584 people, are taking refuge in 27 evacuation centers, with the remaining people being helped outside or finding shelter with friends and family.
Since validations are still being done, the statistics could change.
Now at PHP57,639,282.85, the aid provided to Region 5 includes a variety of supplies such as distilled water in six-liter bottles, family meal kits, family tents, family kits, hygiene kits, laminated sacks, “malongs,” modular tents, rice, sleeping bags, and tarpaulins.
The Office of Civil Defence (OCD) previously declared that it has provided 3,200 sacks of rice and other supplies for the areas impacted by the Mayon Volcano’s continuous unrest to the provincial government of Albay.
Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Defence Secretary and Chairperson of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), and Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, OCD Administrator and NDRRMC Executive Director, presented the supplies to Albay Governor Edcel Lagman earlier.
To help the locals in the impacted areas, OCD previously supplied tarpaulin rolls, N-95 face masks, family food packs, hygiene kits, pelican cases, portable water filtration units, and a water filtration truck to Albay.
The total value of the support supplied by the agency has increased from the prior cost of PHP9.2 million to PHP13.6 million.
Teodoro emphasized the necessity for improved coordination and cooperation amongst government departments to deal with the crisis more successfully.
He also praised the OCD-Bicol regional office for facilitating efficient cooperation between the province of Albay and national government entities.
local food pantry
Speaker Martin Romualdez praised Rep. Fernando Cabredo of Albay’s 3rd district for taking the “laudable initiative” to start a community pantry for evacuees.
Cabredo has told the Speaker’s office that he plans to use the PHP500,000 in financial support from the Romualdez and Tingog Party-list Reps. Jude Acidre and Yedda Marie Romualdez will set up the neighborhood pantry.
“Seeing the community pantry reopen in Albay during this situation is quite comforting. During the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, community pantries represented malasakit (compassion) and hope for Filipinos, according to a statement by Romualdez.
In order to assist the government in meeting the expanding needs of the underprivileged segments, the community pantry concept was born at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many Filipinos lost their livelihoods as a result of the pandemic’s restrictions. Still, kind-hearted people set up spaces—even just tables—and stocked them with food in cans, fresh produce, water, toiletries, and other essentials.
Everyone was allowed to take whatever they needed on any given day.
We discovered that Congressman Cabredo plans to purchase veggies from farmers impacted by Mayon’s outbursts and distribute them gratis to evacuees via the envisaged community pantry. As it would increase the number of people who would benefit from this program, this is worth replicating, according to Romualdez.
Along with Cabredo, Romualdez and Tingog Party-list also gave the same sum to the offices of Edcel Lagman, a representative for Albay’s first district, and Joey Salceda, a representative for the second district.
Additionally, Romualdez gave the three congressmen PHP500,000 worth of relief supplies from his disaster relief fund.
Donations
The Chinese Embassy in Manila also disclosed a donation of disaster relief goods totaling PHP4 million on Friday.
Rear Admiral Su Yinsheng of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy training ship Qi Jiguang and the Embassy presented the donation to Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Thursday.
Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian stated, “We promptly raised more than 103 metric tonnes of rice and other food worth four million pesos to assist the affected people after hearing that the Mayon Volcano’s heightened unrest has forced thousands of residents to be evacuated.
The food donation, which included rice, noodles, cookies, and boxes of flour, according to the ambassador, was sourced from the crew of the Qi Jiguang.
Huang also disclosed a PHP 1 million gift to Cagayan to aid those impacted by Typhoon Betty, which brought heavy rains and gusts to Northern Luzon last week.
“Wealth and misery are constantly shared between China and the Philippines. We hope that residents in the disaster-affected areas can resume their regular jobs and daily lives as soon as possible, Huang said in a statement.
According to a statement from Romualdez’s office, the cash-for-work Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program will release PHP10 million to Salceda’s constituency.
Through their coordination with the DSWD, the Speaker’s office, and the Tingog Party list, they previously promised PHP33 million in aid for the three congressional districts of Albay.
The government would use all of its resources, according to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to assist the families who have been forced to leave their homes due to the unrest of the Mayon Volcano.
