PAL: Consistent flight cancellations because of maintenance issues

A Philippine Airlines (PAL) executive claimed on Friday that retaliation travel brings frequent domestic and international flight cancellations and delays.

In the last two to three weeks, an average of five to ten domestic and international flights per day have been canceled, according to PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna, who spoke to the Philippine News Agency (PNA). Flight delays are not included in these statistics.

The Manila International Airport Authority’s Media Affairs Division (MAD) only reported on Thursday that two CebGo flights between Manila and Busuanga had been canceled due to bad weather.

When questioned about the number of canceled flights, the MAD stated that 29 PAL and CebGo flights were canceled on June 15 while 29 had delays.

The MAD, however, made it clear that they only inform flights postponed because of bad weather.

Meanwhile, Villaluna reported that approximately 20 PAL flights are postponed from June 16 to June 17.

“Affected passengers are rebooked on the next available flights, rerouted or refunded, or booked on other airlines,” the spokeswoman said.

The rise in aircraft undergoing preventive maintenance due to high utilization brought on by retaliation travel or strong travel demand, according to a statement from PAL, is the primary cause of the recent flight cancellations.

As a result, unexpected maintenance problems occur, and some aircraft need preventative maintenance earlier than anticipated, affecting the flying rotations, the statement continued.

PAL said that it is streamlining procedures to reduce hiccups.

PAL wants to alter the maintenance practices to increase productivity and shorten airplane maintenance times. Additionally, it is assessing its ability to carry out critical maintenance without jeopardizing dependability.

The national carrier claimed that steps have already been taken to lower its projected capacity for the future months.
