According to EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell, the war in Ukraine is “cracking” Russia’s strength.

Speaking to reporters en route to a meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers in Luxembourg, Borrell stated: “What has happened over the past few days shows that the war against Ukraine is weakening Russian power and affecting its political system.”

He referred to the uprising against the command of the Russian army that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner paramilitary group, started.

Borrell claimed that by sponsoring the Wagner group, Russian President Vladimir Putin “created a monster” that is now “biting back… the monster is acting against its creator.”

Given the current developments in Russia, he emphasized the importance of the EU supporting Ukraine.

Borrell expressed optimism that the EU’s foreign ministers would approve additional military aid to Ukraine for €3.5 billion (USD3.8 billion).

Tobias Billstrom, the chief diplomat for Sweden, stated that due to international support for Kiev, “Russia is losing the war against Ukraine.”

The EU would “stand by Ukraine to regain its territorial integrity,” he said, adding that the ministers will talk about Ukraine’s integration into the EU and political, military, and humanitarian aid to the nation.

The senior diplomats from the EU will also discuss the bloc’s connections with Latin America and are anticipated to approve the 9th set of sanctions against Iran for its human rights abuses.
