🚌 Davao City Sets Modern Bus System Operation by 2025 📅

The Davao Public Transport Modernization Project (DPTMP) is set to be fully operational in 2025, following the signing of a USD$1 billion loan agreement between the national government, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on July 1.

Davao City administrator Tristan Dwight Domingo expressed his optimism about the project, stating that they aim to have buses running in the city by the end of 2024. The DPTMP will establish an extensive network of 29 routes, covering 672 km of roads, seamlessly connecting key areas within Davao City up to Panabo City in Davao del Norte.

The project will feature 1,105 buses, including nearly 400 electric-articulated buses and the rest compliant with Euro V standards for diesel-powered buses. The buses will have low floors for easy boarding and alighting, as well as closed-circuit television cameras, wheelchair bays, and designated seats for pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

To ensure efficient bus operations, “bus only” lanes, queue jumps, and an intelligent transportation system (ITS) will be implemented, along with the construction of over 1,000 bus stops. Additionally, five depots, three terminals, a driver training facility, pedestrian crossings, and sidewalk improvements will be established to create a well-coordinated and pedestrian-friendly transportation system.

The DPTMP was conceptualized under the leadership of former President Rodrigo Duterte and adopted for implementation by Vice President Sara Z. Duterte. The recent loan signing marks a significant step towards project implementation.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) praised the loan signing, emphasizing the project’s potential to boost the regional economy while mitigating environmental impact. Secretary Jaime Bautista highlighted that the project will advance the electric vehicle agenda by utilizing nearly 400 electric buses alongside regular diesel buses.

The DPTMP aims to establish a high-quality, bus-based public transportation system across 100 kilometers of core routes and over 500 kilometers of feeder routes in the region. 🌇🚌⚡️💼
