El Nino has cautioned the public about water and vector-borne diseases.
According to a disease expert, water-borne and vector-borne illnesses may rise nationwide as the nation endures El Nino.
The president of the Philippine College of Physicians, Dr. Rontegene Solante, stated that tropical nations are prone to water-borne illnesses all year long in a televised Laging Handa public briefing.
“The cases may increase during El Nino, and you get that from contaminated water,” Solante added. “Pwede pa madagdagan ‘to, tagtuyo, El Nino, nakukuha yan sa contaminated water.”
Typhoid fever, brought on by the salmonella bacteria, and shigellosis, characterized by abdominal pain, fever, and bloody or watery diarrhea, are two frequent illnesses typically brought on by not washing hands.
Meanwhile, according to Solante, consuming tainted water might result in hepatitis A, amoebiasis, cholera, fever, diarrhea, and stomach pains.
He claimed that rotavirus and norovirus infections, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in young infants, are widespread non-specific viral diseases.
In addition to carefully conserving clean water, he urged the people to wash their hands before meals.
“If you’re buying prepared meals, make sure that the food is cooked and handled cleanly,” he advised. “If you’re buying prepared meals, ensure the food is cooked and handled cleanly.”
Malaria and dengue are only examples of the numerous vector-borne diseases prevalent throughout the El Nino season.
Additionally, mosquitoes can spread chikungunya, zika, and dengue viruses.
He said we are third on the list of countries with the highest instances this year, and the fatality rate is also rising. “Among Asian countries, tayo ‘yung pangatlo na pinakamataas this year at medyo tumataas rin ang mortality,” he said.
El Nino’s temperature increase changes mosquitoes’ ecology, causing them to migrate or shift to new locations and rendering more of the population susceptible to diseases.
