MANILA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) expressed serious concern on Sunday over the China Coast Guard’s (CCG) “excessive and unlawful actions” when it deployed water cannons against Filipino resupply vessels near Ayungin Shoal on Saturday.

According to Col. Medel Aguilar, spokesperson of the AFP, one of their chartered supply boats was blocked and water cannoned by a CCG vessel while en route to Ayungin Shoal for a routine troop rotation and resupply mission (RORE).

Aguilar denounced the CCG’s actions, stating that it was done without considering the safety of those on board and violated international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) also condemned the CCG’s “dangerous” maneuvers, urging them to respect the sovereign rights of the Philippines in its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, called on the CCG to refrain from impeding freedom of navigation and take appropriate actions against those involved in the incident.

Due to the CCG’s dangerous maneuvers, the second supply boat could not unload its supplies and complete the RORE mission, as reported by Aguilar.

The United States, Australia, and Japan also expressed their support for the Philippines and their concerns over the CCG’s actions, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and ensuring maritime order in the South China Sea.

The incident has raised tensions and highlights the need for responsible actions by all parties involved to prevent further escalation and endangerment of lives in the region.
