ASEAN Unity: A Key to Ensuring Sustainable Environmental Protection 🌍🀝

MANILA – Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda has called upon the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a conglomerate of ten member states, to not only foster regional security and peace but also to collaboratively champion environmental protection for the collective advancement and sustainable growth of the region.

In a statement, Legarda emphasized, “The Southeast Asian region must remain steadfast in its vigilance against the potential threats arising from diverse geopolitical dynamics. Ensuring stability is paramount so that the more than 600 million inhabitants in the region can coexist in harmony and tranquility.”

“As a prominent player on the global economic stage, it is imperative that our progress in the coming years be firmly grounded in a green economy. This strategy will enable forthcoming generations to reap the rewards of our endeavors with minimal disruption from the ramifications of climate change,” she added.

Legarda further aspired that residents of ASEAN nations actively participate in economic prosperity using gainful employment.

She expounded, “Greater employment opportunities translate to enhanced financial resources for all. I implore all member nations of ASEAN to ensure that no one is left behind in pursuing a brighter future for themselves and their families.”

Legarda underscored that the collective economic confidence of the region’s inhabitants would generate substantial dividends through foreign investments. These investments, in turn, would pave the way for sustained prosperity, but this prosperity should be coupled with an unwavering commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for all.

Moreover, she stressed that elevating the policy environment would enable the Philippines to transition into a blue economy that is both sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change.

These affirmations were expressed by Legarda in commemoration of ASEAN Month in August, as decreed under Proclamation No. 282, issued in 2017.

Established in 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The organization was conceived to advance the region’s economic, social, and cultural development through collaborative initiatives. It also endeavors to uphold political and economic stability and provides a platform for the amicable resolution of intraregional differences.
