Innovative Technology to Empower Furniture Makers in Product Diversification

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna — The Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) is stepping up efforts to empower furniture manufacturers through training programs to enable them to create new and appealing products from non-traditional materials.
Margie Dizon, officer-in-charge of FPRDI’s Training and Manpower Development Services Section, highlighted the institute’s commitment to harnessing available technologies to transform hardwood and other forest-sourced materials into high-value finished goods with potential for global export. She emphasized the intention to repurpose what might be viewed as agricultural or production waste, giving it renewed purpose and enhanced value.
Wood manufacturers are expected to diversify their product offerings through this initiative, ultimately bolstering their community’s income. Dizon noted, “We expect our participants, especially those from the (forest products) industry, to produce it at home for livelihood or try it in their own products.”
To facilitate this endeavor, FPRDI is hosting a series of free training sessions throughout the year, focusing on various aspects of product development. This includes bamboo-craft-making in the current month, lumber kiln drying techniques in September, dyeing and bleaching of non-wood forest products in October, and basic finishing techniques in November.
Dizon underlined the demand for export-quality materials in the technology sector, particularly for kiln drying. She explained, “We have standards that must be complied with; hence, they request training from our office.”
Collaborative efforts with the Departments of Trade and Industry, Environment and Natural Resources, and local government units have strengthened the campaign’s impact. Dizon acknowledged the need for cross-agency assistance, particularly regarding funding and resource allocation.
While emphasizing the significance of financial support, she encouraged individuals or groups interested in forest product development to reach out with their inquiries via email at info.fprdi@dost.gov.ph.
Rene Madarang, executive director of the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council (PBIDC), warmly welcomed DOST’s efforts to equip local craftsmen with innovative techniques for producing high-value bamboo-based products. As the nation prepares to observe Philippine Bamboo Month in September, the bamboo-craft-making course organized by FPRDI becomes notably relevant.
Madarang expressed optimism about bamboo’s potential to uplift communities and reduce poverty. “Bamboo can lift many people out of poverty. He affirmed that there is a market for bamboo at any point during its lifecycle, from propagules to the time it is made into engineered bamboo products,” he affirmed.
In further support of the bamboo industry, officers from the Department of Trade and Industry-attached PBIDC are slated to visit Northern Mindanao to assess new bamboo processing facilities and participate in public hearings on bamboo industry development over the upcoming weekend.
