Mayors in the province’s 18 towns have been told by the Antique Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) to keep an eye on people who show signs of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), especially those who have recently moved back in from other parts of the country.

“The Omicron variant is not as bad as the Delta variant, but it is very spreadable,” IPHO Health Officer 1 Dr. Leoncio Abiera Jr. said in a press conference late Wednesday afternoon, per the AP.

He said that among the signs and symptoms of the variant are sneezing and a runny nose, which can be hard to tell apart from a normal cold. This is why it’s important to get it checked out as soon as possible.

Omicron will also be in the new Executive Order (EO) that Governor Rhodora Cadiao will sign because of the meeting of the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force on Covid-19 on January 4, he said.

The province is worried that more people will get sick because of family gatherings during the holidays where people didn’t follow basic health rules.

12 active Covid-19 cases were still going on on January 5, Abiera said. Eight of the cases were in the capital city of Anini-y, with one each in Belison, Laua-an, and Sibalom.

There was one unvaccinated Covid-19 case who was taken to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital (ASMGH), but the other seven are under home quarantine.
