Martial law and absolute lockdown stories are untrue: Lorenzana

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana refuted accusations made in a voice recording that the government would declare martial law by January 10 to stop a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the country.

“This is not the case. False information. Without a doubt, out of the picture, “In a statement to reporters, he stated.

On the chance that President Rodrigo Duterte could declare martial law or total lockdown by next week, a woman is heard warning the public to stock up on food goods till January 30.

According to the woman, no one will be able to leave the house in this scenario, necessitating the need to stock up on supplies.

Lorenzana stated, “There is no compelling basis to impose martial law.”

While the 17,220 Covid-19 infections detected on Thursday are high, they are still less than the more than 26,000 illnesses documented in 2021, according to him.

“Last year, we had a high of almost 26,000 people. We now have 17,220 people. This variation is less virulent than Delta, although being more transmissible. There are fewer people who become critically ill “Added he.

When questioned if a lockdown akin to the enhanced community quarantine enforced in 2020 would be implemented, Lorenzana stated that there would be no total lockdown.

“But not total lockdown,” he said, adding that the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) is still assessing the situation.
