Vaccination will go on as usual, despite the forthcoming elections.

Despite the impending national and municipal elections in May 2022, Malacanang pledged on Tuesday that the country’s national immunization effort will not be hampered.

This comes after Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the chief implementer and vaccine czar for the National Task Force against Covid-19, expressed concern that the upcoming elections could affect daily vaccination output because local government units (LGUs) will be preoccupied as the election campaign begins next month.

“Of course, what we in the national government will do is make sure that our job is not hampered,” Acting Presidential Spokesperson Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said at a Palace news briefing.

To guarantee that vaccination and other government services stay operating, Nograles stressed the importance of coordination between national and local administrations.

He also accepted the fact that certain LGU officials are seeking reelection.

“The fact is that we must always (of course) coordinate with the local government units.” And, in actuality, many of them are elected public officials, pagdating naman sa local government entities,” he continued.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), according to Nograles, would have to ensure that LGUs continue to provide vaccination services while remaining “neutral” in their obligations.

“We will ensure that vaccination and our Covid reaction are not politicized, and that everyone remains impartial, particularly in the case of vaccinations, dapat walang pinipili iyan,” says the group (in administering vaccines, they should not favor anyone). “And we’ll make sure the goals are met,” he added.

Vaccinate yourself.

Meanwhile, Nograles urged seniors who have not yet received their Covid-19 vaccinations to do so.

This comes after the Department of Health revealed that three million elderly people are still unvaccinated. As of 2019, there are over nine million Filipinos aged 60 and up in the country.

“Pakiusap namin sa mga lolo at lola at sa kanilang mga mahal sa buhay (I plead to our grandfathers and grandmothers and their families), please get vaccinated for yourselves and your family.” “Covid-19 is a threat to our seniors,” Nograles added.

He reminded them that the elderly are at the greatest danger of dying as a result of Covid-19.

“Mas kailangan nila ng dagdag proteksyon na binibigay ng bakuna kahit ano pa ang brand nito,” says the narrator. “Ang supply ng bakuna ain’t a problem,” he remarked.

Over 52.8 million people in the country had been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as of January 10.

By June, the Philippines hopes to have vaccinated 90 million people.

A more serious battle

Meanwhile, Nograles rejected a lawmaker’s suggestion for the Senate and House to meet as a constituent assembly to examine a proposal calling for presidents, congressmen, and local officials to serve longer terms.

“May paparating na election sa May 2022,” says the candidate. At sa palagay ko, wala nang oras ang Kongreso sa panukalang ito. And I don’t believe Congress has the time to deal with this plan,” he added.

Aside from the impending elections, he stated that the administration must make the fight against Covid-19 a top priority.

“Isa pa, mayroon tayong mas mabigat na laban at ito po ang laban against Covid-19 (This is the struggle against Covid-19),” he continued.

President Duterte’s supporter, Pampanga Representative Aurelio Gonzales, had previously lobbied for a five-year term for the president and vice president. Under the idea, he also wants them to be able to run for reelection for another term.

He also advocated a five-year tenure for House members, with one reelection.
