Covid-19 is found in around 300 CAAP personnel.
Since January 1, around 300 personnel of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) have tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), according to a CAAP spokesperson.
After the holiday break, employees were subjected to mass testing, and many, including technical professionals, tested positive for the virus, according to CAAP chief of staff Danjun Lucas, who spoke at the Laging Handa public briefing.
CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the Philippine News Agency that the organization has 6,918 employees across the nation, with 6,643 of them having previously been immunized against Covid-19.
After taking an antigen test and a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test for confirmation, Apolonio said 289 of the 1,486 employees at the CAAP central office tested positive.
“The hourly arrival at the NAIA was lowered from 18 to 16 per hour a few hours after the test results (were received),” he said.
Many of them who tested positive and were exposed to Covid positive individuals are air traffic controllers, Lucas said during the briefing.
“As a result, we conducted (Covid) testing on the remaining air controllers. We supplied them with a place to stay and other essentials so that they would be safe while we continued our work “Lucas remarked.
According to Lucas, this resulted in flight delays as airlines reduced their staff owing to Covid-19 infections.
“Air controllers are critical in keeping airports safe and safeguarding the safety of people entering, leaving, and flying within Philippine airspace,” he stated.
“As a result, you may have observed that numerous flights have been canceled or delayed in recent weeks. Because the number of pilots, cabin crew, even ground handlers and security staff has decreased, this is the case “Added he.
According to Lucas, some CAAP personnel have already recovered and have completed their quarantine time.
According to him, at least 40% of CAAP staff currently work from home.
