
All public Chinese New Year celebrations in Manila have been banned.
All public celebrations of the Chinese New Year, which fall on February 1, have been canceled by Manila’s city government.
On Tuesday, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso signed Executive Order (EO) No. 11, suspending all activities and festivities in the Binondo District between January 31 and February 1.
“Nakikisuyo tayo sa ating mga kababayang Filipino-Chinese na wala tayong mga dragon dance, wala tayong mga paputok o firecracker, pinagbabawal din ang inuman o pagbebenta ng alak simula) “We also prohibit the sale of wine and the use of firecrackers from January 31 to February 1,” Domagoso said in an online press conference.
He urged officials in the city’s Chinatown to properly enforce the EO and minimum health requirements in the fight against Covid-19.
Families can discreetly commemorate the event and keep their customs at home, according to Domagoso.

Because of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, the city postponed public Chinese New Year celebrations for the second year, just like other crowd-drawing events and religious celebrations.
According to Domagoso, while the number of cases in the city is decreasing, the threat remains.
Manila had 1,513 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday.
Active infections peaked at 4,102 on January 14, then decreased to more than 3,000 over the next few days, eventually dropping below 2,000 on January 22 at 1,928.
