The seafloor of the Lingayen beach will soon be covered with concrete artificial reefs, creating a fish sanctuary and boosting the livelihood of the local fishermen.

The artificial reefs will be two kilometers off the shoreline, according to Lingayen Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil.

“Our town’s fisherfolk have been catching fewer fish at the Lingayen beach over the years. They capture fish the old-fashioned method…,” he stated on Monday during the Network Briefing News broadcast on the Philippine Information Agency’s Pangasinan Facebook page.

Bataoil said he worked with Governor Amado Espino III of Pangasinan, who viewed this as an opportunity to deploy artificial reefs as a reaction.

By the first week of March, he claimed, the artificial reef structures would be in place.

“These will act as fish sanctuaries, and ideally, the catch of the fishermen will rise,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Bataoil claims that the Lingayen municipal council has approved the erection of fish cages along the town’s riverbanks to offer people an extra source of income.

“Many things could be done up there,” he remarked, including crab farming and other aquaculture activities.
