PCCI, a DICT satellite broadband connectivity partner

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has teamed up with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to test satellite broadband connections in distant locations.

“It is for this reason that PCCI pushed for Executive Order 127 to be signed in 2021. PCCI said in a statement Wednesday that “the aforementioned EO revised EO 467 of 1997 to remove the franchise requirement in the access of international satellite systems.”

This project, according to PCCI president George Barcelon, will assist folks in rural places in utilizing digital technology to access opportunities and services, particularly during the pandemic.

PCCI and DICT will choose six areas around the country for the experimental run of the internet via satellite project as part of the cooperation.

“As we emerge from the epidemic, remote employment and internet-enabled services in education, health care, trade and supply chain management, and even government services may become the norm.” “We need to grow up our digital infrastructure in this area,” Barcelon stated.

“Internet over satellite is one of the best and fastest ways for us to jump into the future of digital connection,” he added, citing the country’s topography.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), local government entities, public schools, and local clinics, among others, could profit from this satellite project, according to Barcelon.

According to the PCCI’s president, satellite internet can assist attract investments to develop these rural places.

According to PCCI Information Committee chair Perry Ferrer, providing accessible and dependable internet services in underserved and unserved communities is vital.

Ferrer went on to say that internet services should be made more inexpensive, particularly for individuals with weaker purchasing power than those in urban regions.

According to the DICT’s 2019 National ICT Household Survey, 88 percent of barangays in the Philippines lack access to free Wi-Fi, 60 percent lack telecommunications towers, and 70 percent lack fiber-optic connections.
