According to a Department of Health (DOH) official in Central Visayas, older adults in the A2 priority category had the lowest vaccination rate among the eligible population for coronavirus illness immunization in 2019. (Covid-19).

In a radio interview, Dr. Van Phillip Baton, DOH-7 program manager for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, claimed that numbers revealed a poor performance in terms of providing additional protection to the region’s elders against the fatal virus.

“Despite the fact that more than half of the population in the region has been vaccinated, we still have a very poor achievement for our elderly citizens, who, according to our census, account for more than half of the fatalities from Covid-19 problems,” Baton remarked in a Cebuano-English mix.

Baton added that “vaccine genuinely is the proof that (it) will minimize mortality Covid-19 problems” among the elderly, citing records.

Only 303,977 of the 589,773 older individuals who were eligible for the vaccines received full doses, including the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Even as he emphasized the necessity for them to be protected from Covid-19 problems, Baton noted such achievement is very modest given their vulnerability to complications.

This capital city, out of all the cities in the region, has the highest immunization rate for the senior population without comorbidities, at 77 percent.

Siquijor had a 76 percent success rate, but Baton said the province’s target population for immunization is quite small. (
