Victims of the ‘Odette’ disaster in Cebu City receive P22 million in monetary assistance.
Mayor Michael Rama announced on Thursday that the municipal administration had delivered PHP22 million in disaster money promised by President Rodrigo Duterte to residents in the city’s hinterland communities whose homes were devastated by Typhoon Odette in December.
More than 5,000 residents from the hinterland communities of Budlaan, Buot-Taup, Capitol Site, Lahug, Malubog, Parian, Paril, and San Jose got PHP1,000 to PHP5,000 in aid from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
On Wednesday, city officials also conducted an awareness campaign regarding the local health unit’s vaccination program and its goal of achieving full population protection against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) this year.
“Pinangga mo sa presidente,” says the speaker. Walay labot si Mike Rama nga nagsige og anhi sa DILG, pinangga mo sa DILG. Simply put, the most crucial pabakuna ta. Pwede? (The President will look after you.) Mike Rama, who constantly returning here, is not taken care of by the DILG. Okay, what matters is that you get vaccinated. Is it really possible?)” Rama stated in a statement to the media.
The assistance for typhoon victims in upland villages was promised by President Duterte when he visited Cebu a few days after “Odette” battered Cebu and other regions of Visayas and Mindanao, according to lawyer Ian Kenneth Lucero, head of the DILG-Cebu City.
The DILG, through Secretary Eduardo Ao, will oversee the provision of financial assistance for typhoon victims living in highly urbanized cities, according to the Chief Executive.
Residents who have not received financial aid based on the city’s Department of Social Welfare and Service (DSWS) list, according to Lucero, can still get help through other means.
The DSWS verified the beneficiary lists that barangay officials had produced and submitted.
Families with more than one person who is poor received PHP5,000 each, while those with fewer members received PHP1,000 each.
Rose Ladioray, a recipient from the Capitol Site, expressed gratitude to the national government for the cash help, stating she had not expected to receive any from the government.
