The United States has announced a P800 million environmental protection fund for the Philippines.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is stepping up its support for the Philippines’ biodiversity conservation efforts, announcing a PHP800 million five-year grant facility to directly fund environmental initiatives run by civil society groups (CSOs) in the country.
The US funding will go to CSOs in the Philippines to support animal preservation, natural resource management, and local climate action under the new Investing in Sustainability and Partnerships for Inclusive Growth and Regenerative Ecosystems (INSPIRE) project.
It will also assist local communities in effectively managing natural resources and mitigating the effects of climate change by supporting media groups that cover crucial natural resource governance problems.
“Civil society plays a vital role in conserving the environment and addressing climate change as advocates for improved governance and partners of the public sector,” USAID Philippines Acting Mission Director Sean Callahan said on Friday.
“Through the INSPIRE project, USAID is pleased to support the Philippines’ efforts to conserve the country’s rich biodiversity and mitigate the effects of climate change, all while ensuring that the environment continues to benefit many Filipinos whose livelihoods are reliant on natural resources,” he added.
According to the US Embassy in Manila, USAID will implement the new initiative in collaboration with the Philippine government and other relevant partners.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated more than USD157 million to help the country conserve biodiversity and maintain its landscapes and seascapes.
