Korea contributes P15 million to rebuilding shelters in ‘Odette’-affected areas.
The South Korean government has pledged USD300,000 (about PHP15 million) to help the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) restore shelters in the provinces hit by Typhoon Odette.
The UNDP Philippines announced on Wednesday that the collaboration with South Korea will focus on providing emergency relief as well as long-term resilience building to the Dinagat Islands’ affected people.
“The Republic of Korea has contributed USD 300,000 to UNDP’s initiative to help rebuild shelter in numerous areas. The chosen recipients will be taught how to design and rebuild their own homes using typhoon-resistant shelter designs that can endure heavy winds and flooding “In a statement, it stated.
The shelter help is part of Seoul’s USD2 million (PHP102.4 million) humanitarian aid package for Typhoon Odette-affected regions.
Food would be sent to nearly 4,000 needy households in Bohol, Southern Leyte, and other badly damaged areas using USD600,000 (around PHP31 million) of this money.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene services (WASH) will be funded in Surigao del Norte, Southern Leyte, and the Dinagat Islands for about USD700,000 or PHP36 million.
“For food assistance, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea is collaborating with the World Food Program, UNICEF for WASH, and the Philippine Red Cross and the UNDP for resilient resettlement housing,” the Embassy stated in a statement.
Prior to this, the Korean Embassy delivered 1,500 sacks of rice and 740 hygiene kits to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for USD50,000 (PHP2.5 million) on December 29.
“The Embassy of the Republic of Korea hopes that the lives of those impacted by Typhoon Odette will return to normalcy as soon as possible,” it added. “(We’ll) continue to work together with our friends and partners toward this goal.”
In December 2021, Typhoon Odette hit the country, affecting almost 8 million people.
To date, the agriculture sector has suffered damage worth nearly PHP16 billion, while infrastructural damage has cost more than PHP17 billion. The cyclone also damaged 1.4 million homes and forced 339,000 people to flee their homes.
The UNDP has also contributed USD650,000 (PHP33 million) in the response and resilience efforts in Odette-affected areas, particularly in Cebu, Siargao, and Dinagat Islands, recognizing the Philippines’ “high susceptibility” to natural disasters.
In addition, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, it is working to restore vital connective information structure and emergency telecommunications services for government responders (DICT).
“The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) focuses on supporting corrective steps that will minimize the current level of hazards. We are collaborating with key government agencies and local governments to strengthen their risk management capabilities in order to reduce susceptibility and exposure to threats and hazards “Selva Ramachandran, UNDP Resident Representative in the Philippines, stated.
“We also aim to improve digital governance to make social services more available to citizens, particularly during natural disasters,” he added.
