Down to 319 granular lockdown zones: DILG

MANILA, Philippines — As the country continues to improve its coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) condition, the number of places under granular lockdown has decreased to 319.

Secretary Eduardo Ao of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) told President Rodrigo R. Duterte during the Talk to the People briefing Monday night that the number has dropped by nearly half from 605 areas last week.

“The number of barangays affected by granular lockdowns has decreased to 153 from 210 last week. We only have 355 affected households out of 744 total. So far, just 499 people have been affected “Ao stated.

The number of areas under granular lockdown is expected to decrease as the government ramps up its immunization campaign, he noted.

The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) still has the most granular lockdown areas, with 176, followed by the Ilocos Region (97), the National Capital Region (22), the Cagayan Valley (19), Mimaropa (4), and the Zamboanga Peninsula (1).

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) approved the decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to keep Alert Level 2 in Metro Manila from February 16 to 28.

PNP commander Gen. Dionardo Carlos said in a statement that the move will assist maintain the pace of the region’s improving Covid-19 situation.

“Switching to the most forgiving alert level, Alert Level 1, can lead to complacency. It is feasible to set sufficient limits such that the public is still obligated to follow tougher health protocols,” he noted.

According to Carlos, the action is also necessary to regulate crowds that have gathered in recent days with the opening of the campaign period for national candidates in the May 9 elections.

Except for Iloilo City, Iloilo Province, Guimaras, Zamboanga City, Davao De Oro, Davao Occidental, and South Cotabato, all of Metro Manila and the rest of the country are on Alert Level 2.
