MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City University (QCU) will put its vacant spaces to good use with the establishment of a Center for Urban Agriculture and Innovation on Tuesday.

The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) contributed PHP14.5 million to assist in the development of the facility, which was created under the direction of the QC Government’s Sustainable Development Affairs Unit.

To enable QCU to incorporate urban agriculture into its curriculum programs in the future, the Center will generate initiatives for viable livelihood projects, as well as to conduct training and development activities.

Aside from urban gardens, the Center will contain a bee farm with five colonies initially financed by the QCU Cooperative, whose members received beekeeping instruction.

Honey House is a training venue that was renovated from an ancient structure on campus.

Dr. Theresita Atienza, president of QCU, stated that the Center will reaffirm its commitment to the city’s urban agricultural initiatives’ long-term viability.

“We intend to leverage our extensive campus grounds by adding activities and projects that are compatible with the local government’s development aims,” Atienza stated at the unveiling.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the city increased its sustainable efforts by establishing backyard and community farms, as well as fish cages, to help boost the food security program and provide jobs and livelihood.

The Quezon City Polytechnic University was founded on March 1, 1994, and was originally known as QCU.

Its skills and training centers helped it get recognition from the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority as well as a partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

In July of this year, it was transformed to QCU.
