With a nursery and a learning center, the effort to plant a million trees is almost complete.
MANILA, Philippines — While the country is consumed by election fever and the ongoing battle against the Covid-19 outbreak, the Million Trees Foundation, Inc. (MFTI) is working hard to protect the environment.
Melandrew Velasco, president, and executive director of MFTI, said the project’s first phase, the MFTI Tree Nursery and Eco Learning Center, is nearly finished.
“Despite the pandemic, we must continue to advocate for environmental preservation,” Velasco remarked recently.
The project is located in Novaliches, Quezon City, and was granted to the foundation by the government through the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, as stipulated in a memorandum of agreement.
They are active partners in the Annual Million Trees Challenge (AMTC), a watershed rehabilitation project launched in 2017 for the benefit of seven watersheds critical to the water supply in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, alongside water concessionaires Maynilad Water Services, Inc. and Manila Water.
Since 2019, San Miguel Corporation, a supporter, has planted 3.8 million trees.
Upland tree seedlings have an 89 percent survival rate, while mangrove saplings have a 91 percent survival rate.
The AMTC’s efforts will be centered on the MFTI Nursery and Satellite Office.
Aside from sapling production, it will serve as a training and seminar site as well as a learning center for environmental conservation.
Narra, ilang-ilang, bamboo, and other indigenous trees suited for forest rehabilitation have been identified as saplings to be cultivated.
